Witte 6HP Horizontal Engine
Welcome to the pictures of our Witte generator set. It is a 6HP
generator set built some time in late 1946. We acquired it from our
neighbors in 1975 when we moved to our current home.  We live five
miles up a private dirt road and are two miles from the nearest
utilities, which is why we have a generator.
You can see in some of the pictures where we had to have the
engine welded. The  engine had frozen and cracked the case and
head at some time in the past. I have no idea what the history of the
engine is prior to the time it came to us. Since we rebuilt it, it has run
10-14 hours a day, seven days a week. Over the years we have
made repairs to it many times, ranging from swapping the head
every 2-3 years, to complete rebuilds of the alternator.
We have made a few modifications to the generator set, most
notably the starter and flywheel gear, and we're considering adding
an automotive alternator to charge the battery connected to the
starter. We also added a device to the generator pulley (not shown in
the pictures) to keep the pulley from coming loose and throwing the
belts, which is a problem we've had in the past.
As you can see from the pictures the engine is fairly dirty, but
then again it is a working engine, not a show engine. If I take some
pictures after we swap the head next time it'll be a bit cleaner.

One thing I need to mention before we get to the pictures is that

So without further ado, here's the pictures.
